The
Swan Functionally Gradiant Metal Matrix Composite Process
The
inclusion of ceramic or carbide particles of various sizes and compositions
within a metal casting has long been a sought after process to modify
the characteristics of the finished part. Their form can be as particulates
of various sizes, platelets, whiskers or short fibers. The ceramic
used is determined by the application and the alloy needed.
The
high costs of controlling where the ceramic is placed within the
part and its concentration at any particular location within the
part have previously limited the application of this technology.
Swan Metal Composites has developed and patented a lower cost process
which allows direct casting of high concentrations of included ceramics
and the control of the concentrations within the part without the
use of “preforms.”
